State Representative Larry Pickett of Keene saw a sweepstakes as a way of raising money for education. Between 1953 and 1963, Pickett proposed a Sweepstakes bill five times, finally succeeding in getting it passed in 1963. New Hampshire cities and towns voted by special ballot and two days after the vote, sweepstakes tickets went on sale. This launched the first state lottery in the nation. To date, the lottery has contributed more than $2.6 billion to education.

“Annalee Thorndike and husband, Chip, lived on a chicken farm in Meredith. After the chicken farm failed in the early 1950s, Annalee was forced to get serious about her childhood hobby of doll making with a dash of Yankee influence. The old chicken coop became a design room. Chip became a salesman. Annalee became a doll maker,” Annalee Dolls states on its website. The doll’s popularity grew over the years and became collector’s items. Annalee passed away in 2002, shortly after the decision to outsource manufacturing overseas. The company was acquired by its manufacturer but continues to operate as The Annalee Gift Shop
in Meredith.

The Colonial Theater, Keene

The performing arts center opened its doors in 1924 hosting live performances, film, opera, theatre, and vaudeville. The growing popularity of television in the 1940s brought on the rapid decline of vaudeville and by 1945 The Colonial Theatre discontinued live entertainment. In the 1950s, the theater installed a permanently fixed screen for movies, which prevented using the stage for live performances. In 1984 the Theatre was purchased by Steve Levin and Ira Gavin, who brought back live entertainment, but the theatre continued to fall into disrepair. In 1992 a group of community leaders, artists and businesspeople began discussing the restoration of the theatre and converting it to a nonprofit community performing arts center. In late 1993, The Colonial Theatre Group acquired the theatre and raised $2.5 million for renovations. The Colonial Theatre was named to the NH State Register of Historic Places in 2004. Each year, more than 50,000 patrons attend performances ranging from international touring productions to locally produced performances. Two years ago, the theater underwent extensive renovations and acquired and remodeled a second building, creating a new performance and event space.

One hundred years ago, the Model T was being mass produced, and America decided their cars deserved a new style of door for garages—upward acting, or overhead, doors. Edward Fimbel Sr. struck a deal with the inventor of that door to become a manufacturer for them. Fimbel has a long history that includes family members spinning off 10 different Fimbel companies from that original manufacturer, including Fimbel Garage Doors in Merrimack. The Fimbel family opened a second manufacturing plant in Nashua in the early 1950s. While that plant closed decades later, the NH branch of the Fimbel family decided to spin out a company that focused on selling Fimbel garage doors as well as those from other manufacturers, says Jon Fimbel, general manager. That included Jon’s father Carl and his Uncle Mike. Jon and his brother Andy grew up in the family business and by 2014, when their uncle retired from the company, Carl invited his sons to become co-owners.

In 1919, Jesse Wade (J.W.) Greer founded the J.W. Greer Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to manufacture automated confectionery and bakery equipment. The company eventually grew to over 650 employees. In 1926, his son, Fred Greer, designed a machine that could create wire strands to be used in the chocolate coating machines. The wire belt division of J.W. Greer Co. continued to grow and in 1947, Wire Belt Co. of America was formed. In 1989, Wire Belt Company of America moved to Londonderry, NH. In 1996 and 1998, the company acquired operations in England and Germany. In 2023, the company moved to a larger state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Bedford.

Tod and Vicki O’Dowd are the fourth generation owners of Avery Insurance. Tod’s great grandfather started the insurance firm in 1899 as Avery & Son. Tod, who serves as president, joined the family firm in the early 90s and Vicki eventually joined as vice president of marketing and operations. Avery has cultivated partnerships with several wealth advisors, CPAs and attorneys. In 2007, the firm opened an office in downtown Portsmouth. They further expanded in 2019, opening an office in New Orleans.

Granite VNA, which provides visiting nurse and hospice care, is also celebrating the 30th anniversary of Granite VNA Hospice House. Granite VNA was founded in 1899 as the Concord District Nursing Association by social reformer and author Lillian Carpenter Streeter and Dr. Nelson McMurphy. The two were inspired by the district nursing movement that began in England in 1859 to form an agency to tend to the health needs of Concord’s most vulnerable residents. Granite VNA Hospice House opened in 1994, and was the first of its kind in NH. Granite VNA is the result of several mergers of VNA organizations over the years, most recently between Concord Regional VNA and Central NH VNA & Hospice.

Richardson Electrical Company, Seabrook

Richardson Electrical Company was started by Harry L. Anderson in Waltham, Massachusetts. Harry and another electrician installed electric igniters and wiring to electrically ignite gas lamps. Vaughan A. Richardson, Harry’s nephew, took over the company in 1926 after Harry passed. By the 1930s, Richardson Electrical began being paid by the Edison Company to wire homes, driving the company to work seven days a week for almost 15 years through the great depression. In 1950, Vaughan’s son, Gerald A. Richardson, joined the company. At the time, treatment of wastewater and town water supplies was expanding, and Gerald taught himself how to build early motor control centers and implement the new methods of monitoring and control of these systems. In the 1970s, the company built half of all the wastewater pumping stations in New England. In the 1980s, Gerald’s sons Vaughan A. Richardson II and Glen D. Richardson joined the company. In 2001, Linda S. Richardson, the fifth generation to lead the company, took over as president, expanding into industrial, commercial, and governmental markets as well as renewable energy.
