Granite Crock Rewards Debunking

A group of NH residents and representatives concerned with the rise of misinformation entering political debate and policy conversations is offering monthly $100 prizes to people who can “debunk the bull.” Granite Crock is a nonprofit with a Facebook forum launched in January for NH residents who “are tired of the bull.” The site allows users to submit information debunking misinformation and vote monthly on the “best debunker.”

Founding board member Jeanne Dietsch says they want to break down the barriers that prevent people from understanding complex policy issues shaping NH by cutting through political spin. “People are just so overwhelmed,” she says.

While Granite Crock welcomes anyone to participate, at this time its board members are all Democrats.

Dietsch says that while there are no Republican board members yet, they are welcome to join. “This is not a place where you slam this party or that party,” she says.

She adds people don’t realize how dramatic some of the proposed changes are within the current legislative session, and some bills may not get the attention they deserve.

The first winner of the $100 Best Debunker prize in January was Laura Lynch for her post about a bill that would change the Community Power Law signed by Gov. Chris Sununu in 2019. Lynch’s post was chosen by Granite Crock members from among seven finalists from the 70 posts and more than 600 engagements during the organization’s first month online. The February winner was Shana Potvin, who wrote about taxpayer-funded school vouchers.

New Hampshire residents interested in contributing or voting in the monthly contest may sign up at eepurl.com/hm2aSf.
