Colby-Sawyer Adds Majors

Published Thursday Nov 20, 2008

Colby-Sawyer College in New London had its largest entering class in history this year - 404 students-and the school hopes the addition of three new majors, a few new minors and new faculty will add to its appeal.

This school year, Colby-Sawyer introduced art history, creative writing and environmental science as majors; and chemistry and education as minors, as well as a coaching certificate program. The college also increased its faculty by five to 65 full-time professors. We think that having more variety is one of the many things that makes us attractive to incoming students, says Deborah Taylor, academic vice president and dean of faculty, adding that for the 30 percent of students entering undeclared, this will give them more options.

The new additions mean the college now offers 15 majors and 18 minors. The last time Colby-Sawyer added a major-community and environmental studies-was a decade ago.

Taylor says the new majors are in areas where the college is already strong and do not require any additional building space. As of now, the college is at capacity for office space, classrooms and residence halls. Taylor says the college plans to construct a new fine arts building, but that is obviously a long-term goal.
