A company that has made the Best Companies to Work For list a dozen times knows taking care of employees during a crisis will help the organization survive.
When the pandemic hit, Delta Dental gave employees 10 extra days of special emergency leave. When dentists’ offices closed statewide and claims plummeted, the company made a tough decision to furlough 40 employees while letting them tap into that emergency leave before having to go on unemployment. President and CEO Tom Raffio asked for furloughed workers’ personal email addresses so he could maintain the social connection throughout the furlough. And, when dentistry reopened, furloughed employees were all brought back.
With 75% of its workforce heading off to work remotely, the company made sure workers were supplied with laptops and computers and provided with ergonomic chairs and adjustable sit-to-stand desks. They even created a virtual workshop with an ergonomic specialist to help employees set up a safe and comfortable workspace at home.
To keep its culture going, they leveraged a longstanding partnership with NH Humanities to provide a monthly Humanities at Work program. Those virtual sessions have covered such topics as the history of Juneteenth, how the Civil War and technology shaped America and NH breweries. It also offers virtual mindfulness sessions to help employees manage stress.
And when COVID-19 meant canceling the annual employee appreciation event, the organization sent every employee a $50 Amazon gift card.
