Robert O’Connor, president and CEO, says, as a software company, Loftware was already prepared to have a fully remote workforce when the pandemic hit. But they still had to adjust their focus to ensure employees felt connected and supported, he says.
“I felt the most important thing was to overcommunicate,” says O’Connor. So Loftware went from quarterly all-hands meetings to weekly ones. They have since shifted to every two weeks, and, because of their popularity, O’Connor says he is keeping them.
While the meetings feature company updates, they also include a chance to have fun together like a virtual scavenger hunt that O’Connor says had employees and their families running through their homes and providing plenty of laughs. Loftware has also hosted baby showers on Zoom and online Happy Hours.
“This isn’t easy and not business as usual or life as usual,” O’Connor says, so human resources has been having one-on-one calls with each employee to check on their well-being and refer them to resources through the company’s Employee Assistance Program. “We want to make sure everyone is getting through it. It even provided laptops to employees’ children to use for remote learning so they didn’t have to compete with their parents for computer time.
It is an extension of the family-first attitude and sense of community that has long been a part of Loftware’s culture. And that family-first attitude means employees take whatever time they want as long as their work gets done.
