Amazon Gets Serious About Profitability

There seems little doubt that Amazon.com is crushing it and Macy's is flailing. So who has the best profitability? Well, it's not even close. As Steve Dennis, Forbes contributor, writes Macy's operating margin is just over 6 percent. In recently reporting what was widely seen as a blowout quarter, Amazon is just now approaching a whopping 2 percent in its non-Amazon Web Services business. By just about any comparison, in most categories, Amazon's margin performance appears to be anywhere from lousy to lackluster, despite its vast capabilities and more than 20 years of working hard at most of it.
