Family businesses are the backbone of the economy but they are feeling the pain of the global economy. According to the PwC 2025 Global Family Business Survey, 25% of family businesses saw double-digit sales growth over the past year, falling from 43% in 2023.

Per the same survey almost one-quarter are looking to stabilize their core business over the next two years and safeguarding the business and preserving the family’s legacy rank as the top long-term goals for these business leaders.

While only 22% say they are rethinking their management strategies, many are exploring or investing in technology, with 60% seeing AI as a growth opportunity. Fully, 65% place technological advancements and 64% place digital transformation among their top growth priorities.

To highlight this critical sector of the economy, Business NH Magazine amasses an annual list of the Top Family-Owned Businesses in NH. Family businesses from across the state, with annual revenue of $1 million or more, are invited to complete the survey.

Of the 111 businesses on this year’s list, 81% grew revenue between 2023 and 2025, with 40% experiencing average annual growth of 10% or more. Four sectors dominate the list: Retail/wholesale (25%), construction/trades (22%), business services (19%) and manufacturing (18%).

Collectively, the 111 companies generated $27.4 billion in revenue in 2025 and employed more than 25,500 full-time workers (more than 6,800 in NH) and more than 2,600 part-timers or seasonal workers.

These are companies with longevity. The average number of years the companies on the list have been family-owned is 44 and 13% have been doing business for more than 100 years. More than 75% of the businesses have been owned by only one or two generations of family.
