HEB Engineers has spent more than five decades designing the roads, bridges and infrastructure around Northern New England. But ask employees what distinguishes the North Conway firm, and the answer is as much about quality engineering as ownership, trust and a workplace built around people.

Employee-owned, HEB has created a culture where employees shape the company’s future and share in its success. The firm’s mission captures that philosophy. “Empowering our people to positively impact our clients and communities” guides everything from leadership development to community service, says President Joshua McAllister.

New hires receive 24 days of paid time off immediately, including 40 hours of front-loaded PTO. Employees also receive 16 hours of paid volunteer time annually, flexible scheduling, hybrid work options, employer-paid family and medical leave, and professional development, including tuition reimbursement, licensure preparation and mentoring. Full-time surveyors also receive up to $700 annually for field gear, while part-time and temporary employees receive up to $350.

Discretionary profit sharing averaged 18% of salary last year, while 401(k) profit-sharing contributions and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan allow employees to benefit from the firm’s success.

Community and camaraderie are equally important. Employees typically use eight volunteer hours with a nonprofit of their choice and eight on team projects, including Berlin’s Day of Caring and a cleanup at Kennett Middle School. Outside work, employees connect through mountain biking, skiing, hiking, hockey, pottery, book clubs and other activities. A “Coffee Break” Teams channel extends that camaraderie online, with employees sharing everything from family activities to ski reports.
