Product/Service: Diesel fuel services onsite, and consulting and advocacy to the emergency power industry

When Michelle Hilger founded Mongoose Power Solutions in 2019, she planned to serve as a consultant for the emergency power industry, leveraging her 15 years of experience in the field. “I help bridge that gap between end users, manufacturers, [and] regulators,” Hilger says.

While Mongoose Power Solutions provides consulting services, about 80% of the company’s revenue comes from another offering clients requested: servicing and testing the diesel that fuels emergency generators.

“Today’s engines are more sensitive. The smallest speck of dust, the smallest drop of water, is like a missile going through these systems,” Hilger explains. “Your diesel generator is only as reliable as the power source, and the power source is often the most neglected [part].”

Today, Mongoose tests and services the diesel that powers generators at hospitals, municipal buildings, and other facilities that must have a reliable backup power supply. Mongoose techs travel as far north as the Canadian border, as far south as Maryland, and as far west as Ohio, returning to each client semi-annually to make sure the fuel for their backup power supply is in good working order.

This pivot to service has led to massive growth for Mongoose over the past three years—to more than $1 million in revenue by 2023. “Over the next three years, I only see more growth,” Hilger says.

The company has eight full-time and three part-time employees, but Hilger does almost all the evaluations of fuel reports, and interpretation of data. She would love to train someone to share her role.

Hilger is also looking at building software that could automate part of the process. Despite the challenges, she isn’t deterred.

The name Mongoose comes from her childhood nickname. “I would never give up and was always relentless,” she says. “The smallest prey can take on the biggest predator, and I’ll be relentless for my customer base.”
