Perks are great, but it’s culture that keeps employees. No one knows that better than the organizations on the 2018 list of the Best Companies to Work For in NH. While they offer some amazing benefits and policies, those are just the tools they use to drive the cultures that ultimately engage employees. Well Sense wants its employees to have their moment in the sun, so it hands out Shines awards when someone goes above and beyond and embodies strategic goals, such as best-in-class customer service. A Shine was awarded to a team member who volunteered to drive left-over holiday party food to a local shelter, while another was awarded to a customer care representative who skillfully managed a call from a suicidal member. Award recipients are recognized in the weekly newsletter, receive a $200 bonus and become eligible for an annual award with a bonus of $1,000.
Sunny certificates reward smaller acts of exemplary performance such as volunteering to do office mail while the office manager position was vacant or going above and beyond for a member. Winners can select from an assortment of gift cards in the “Sunny Vault.”
Employee surveys are conducted several times a year on a variety of topics, even about meetings. Following all-staff meetings (held twice annually) employees are sent with a survey asking about their experience. Was the meeting too long?
Was the information meaningful? Was the information relevant and easy to understand? Did you like the team building/fun portion of the meeting, why or why not? Answers to these surveys are compiled and presented to executives to help plan the next all-staff meeting.
Well Sense has an active tuition reimbursement program—reimbursing $5,250 annually—that has allowed many employees to complete degrees at the bachelor’s and master’s level. A mentoring program partners mid-level staff with senior leaders so employees can advance their careers. In addition to annual training required by regulators, employees can access a suite of professional development training for their own growth.
Employees receive between 26 and 34 days of paid time off as well as nine paid holidays. Additional floating holidays are earned if the company meets a challenge. For example, after achieving a certain number of Twitter followers by a deadline, all staff received an additional floating holiday to use in December.
